PLAN FOR DISCLOSURE
THE NIXON ADMINISTRATION
Richard Nixon was a significant exception to the shift of power in UFO research from the executive branch to the military-industrial community seen previously in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Nixon came from the Eisenhower White House and was an insider to many of the UFO secrets revealed to the security-minded president. There are numerous reports of Nixon being present at White House meetings discussing the UFO issue. Nixon, unlike Kennedy and Johnson, was on the inside, and until Watergate, he wielded a big stick.
The Nixon administration's UFO involvement is compelling because of their collaboration with two principal figures in an attempt at disclosure: writer Robert Emenegger, and his partner, producer Allan Sandler, who produced the NBC documentary, UFOs: Past, Present and Future, that was covered in the introduction. This documentary gave a never seen before and never seen since view behind-the-scenes of the government's handling of the UFO issue. However, to understand their participation it is necessary to first understand the development of the Nixon administration, and its interest in the UFO issue and possible desire for disclosure.
In 1962, Richard Nixon was a broken man. He had narrowly lost the race for president to John F. Kennedy in 1960, and in 1962 he lost the race for governor of his home state of California to incumbent governor Pat Brown. It was after this last loss that Nixon declared he was retiring from politics, and famously said to the media: âYou won't have Nixon to kick around anymore.â
For a while Nixon stayed out of politics, joining a prestigious law firm and even arguing a case before the Supreme Court. In 1964 he edged back into politics when he introduced the GOP's presidential nominee, Sen. Barry Goldwater, at the 1964 convention. After Goldwater's defeat in 1964, the pieces of crushed conservatism in the U.S., a movement many thought was dead, were picked up by a new conservative star, Ronald Reagan. However, Reagan needed to hold public office before running for president and in 1966 he ran and won the race for governor of California. This put Nixon in the front-runner spot for the 1968 presidential race, a race he won by a narrow margin over Johnson's vice president, Hubert Humphrey. Although Nixon's first years as president were troubled by inflation and unemployment, in 1971, some drastic economic changes, including temporary wage and price controls, helped turn the economy around.
It was in foreign policy that Nixon excelled. His lists of accomplishments are impressive: opening up to China, détente with the Soviet Union, arms-limitation talks, withdrawal from Vietnam, and a host of other diplomatic matters.
What is hard for people today to remember or understand, especially younger people, is that Nixon was an extremely popular president prior to Watergate. His landslide reelection was almost historic in the size of the popular vote. Because of this, Nixon gained great power. Riding high in the polls Nixon was able to take on issues that would have been unheard of from other presidents.
